Using an ND Graduated filters

Article text
Old Pier, Swanage
Having just spent the weekend in Dorset using a series of filters I thought it would be good to share some of the lessons. One of the most important bits of kit in my camera bag are the ND Filters. In the image of The Old Pier at Swanage I was using a 2 stop ND Grad filter with a 3 stop ND. The combination of the two filters provided a smoothing of the difference in the sky and the sea and flattening the sea.

The following video by the great Joe Cornish (possibly the UK's greatest landscape photographer) provides a great tutorial on using ND grad filters. Take a look:

There are two main manufacturers - Lee Filters (the professional choice) and Cokin (cheaper but do have professional ranges - the X-Pro and Z-Pro). For more details, feel free to contact me.
