By the end of the 17th Century, when the pale was no longer maintained, there were virtually no deer on the forest. Since then numbers have exploded. On the forest you will see fallow deer. In addition, the forest is home to communities of Roe, Sika and Muntjac. One of the best places to see the various types of deer is in the grounds of the Ashdown Park Hotel.
